Sport Program Structure
STRUCTURED PROGRAM OF REGIONAL TALENT (SPORT) REGIONAL BASED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Academy programs are a partnership between the Academy and the relevant state/regional sporting body. As such, Academy programs form an integral part of the state talent development pathway.
TRAINING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT
The focus of the programs is on athlete development (rather than achieving results), and as such the Academy coaches strive to assist each individual become a well-rounded athlete by developing their sport specific techniques and strategies.
SPORTS SCIENCE SUPPORT
Through its partnership with Country Energy the Academy is able to support its athletes, coaches, and programs with scientific and technical testing and monitoring. All test protocols are in line with those used at the higher levels of the sport, therefore results provide valuable feedback for coaches and athletes alike.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
A key objective of the NIAS is to develop athletes both on and off the field to produce outstanding sport citizens. The Joblink Plus Regional Athlete and Coach Education (RACE) program provides education and awareness through workshops on Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Media presentation, public speaking, sun safe practises, career and work placement to athletes, parents and coaches. Athletes are also called upon throughout their scholarship to represent the NIAS at sponsor and promotional events.
COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES
Whilst the primary focus of Academy programs is on individual athlete development, the Academy recognises the need for athletes to have the opportunity to put techniques learnt into practice in competitive situations. Therefore Academy Squads compete in Inter-Academy carnivals to hone their skills. In 2006 a new organisation was formed, Academies of Sport Incorporated and this organisation stages the Clubs NSW “Academy Games” in October each year.
