The NIAS Basketball Program provides high-performance coaching, skill development and education opportunities to support athletes in progressing to higher levels of representation within basketball.

The program is endorsed by Basketball NSW as an official step in the state athlete pathway. NIAS works to enhance opportunities for athletes aiming for selection in state squads, state teams, and progression into Basketball NSW development programs and higher levels of the pathway.

Athletes selected into the Basketball NSW SPP program are eligible to trial for acceptance into the NIAS program.

Positioned between local representative basketball and higher-level state opportunities, the NIAS program supports athletes who are ready to take the next step in their development journey.

The 2025 Basketball Program will run from October 2025 to April 2026, with athletes graduating at the 2026 NIAS Presentation Night.

The NIAS Basketball Program is a program endorsed by Basketball NSW. The program is part of the BNSW athlete pathway and includes athletes in the Developing Athlete Program (DAP) and State Performance Plan (SPP). For further clarity, athletes who are selected to the State Performance Plan (SPP) are eligible for the NIAS program.

The Academy program ‘sits’ between local representative basketball and higher order representation such as NSW State Country Team selection. The program exists to up-skill athletes and assist them in progressing to higher representation in the sport of basketball.

Basketball athletes receive the following:

  • Regional training sessions | technical and tactical skill development
  • Access to RuralFit Training Hubs around the region for strength and conditioning training.
  • Intensive training sessions by local elite coaches
  • Skill development
  • Inter-Academy Development camps
  • Injury prevention screenings and Strength and Conditioning training programs
  • Sports science fitness testing
  • Educational seminars
  • Access to purchase NIAS merchandise pack
  • Functional movement screening
  • Educational seminars
  • Opportunities to compete in elite events such as the Your Local Club Academy Games

The program is open to male and female basketball players who are registered with a Basketball NSW affiliated association. Athletes will be offered a place in the NIAS Basketball Program based on performance at selection trials and through talent identification processes, including attitude and commitment to basketball.

For 2025/26, the program will cater for two age groups:

  • Male and female athletes aged 12–13 years (born in 2013/2014)

  • Male and female athletes aged 14–15 years (born in 2011/2012)

Eligible athletes must reside in, or attend school within, the NIAS catchment area and be a registered member of a Basketball NSW affiliated association.
